David Karran, a key player for many years with the band, recently won an award for best principal cornet at the Brighouse March and Hymn contest. David is currently plying his trade as the principal cornet of champion section band “Hepworth”, but he returned to help out his previous band for this event. He was principal of “Skelmanthorpe” before he left for his new post earlier this year.

David joined Onchan Silver Band at the tender age of just 5, and we’re all very proud of his achievements and the player he has developed into today. He has recently completed his degree in brass band studies at Huddersfield University where he studied under the renowned cornet virtuoso Philip McCann. He is continuing his studying for a Master of Arts in performance, keeping himself busy with his position at Hepworth and as a brass tutor to the Rochdale Youth Orchestra.

Skelmanthorpe also won the Stuart Broadbent Memorial Trophy in the same competition (The “Brighouse Lions Charity 12th Festival of Brass") while David was rewarded for his efforts with a brand new Yamaha “Xeno” Cornet!

David will be out and about with Onchan Silver Band through the summer as he returns to his roots for his summer holidays.David Karran
